  1. HIROHITO: Also called Showa, a 
  2. modern emperor of JAPAN. His reign 
  3. lasted from before World War II 
  4. through the period of reconstruction 
  5. and the transformation of JAPAN into 
  6. one the world's major industrial 
  7. powers. Hirohito (1901-1989) assumed 
  8. the throne in 1926 upon the death of his 
  9. father the Emperor Taisho. As crown 
  10. prince, Hirohito visited the island of 
  11. OKINAWA, where he first witnessed an 
  12. exhibition of KARATE-JUTSU. He had 
  13. always been a supporter of the martial 
  14. arts until his last days he was an avid 
  15. fan of SUMO wrestling. When he 
  16. retuned to JAPAN, he reported to his 
  17. father on the local martial arts that he 
  18. had seen in OKINAWA and encouraged 
  19. the Ministry of Education to invite 
  20. FUNAKOSHI GICHIN to JAPAN to
